Summary of the case against KidVicious7742

On June 13th, we received a report from [info]akichuu that a poster on Quizilla has reposted a GazettE RPF story that belonged to her. Original post can be viewed HERE

(Details under the cut) )

The story has since been removed from her page and profile.

Given that the story posted is a verbatim copy, KidVicious7742 will be added to the list of know plagiarists.

I've been told by the nice people in [info]fanficrants to report this here.

So there's a fanfic titled Under the Stars posted HERE and.. WOW, haven't I read that somewhere?

Oh yeah! Because that is MY FIC being COPIED, PASTED, POSTED and CLAIMED as someone else's. Word by word, sweeties. Word by word.

Proves are here at my fanfic list. Under the Stars is MY creation, and it's been posted ages ago.

I was pointed in the direction of this community through a rant on plagiarism I posted recently in [info]fanficrants; I am new to this so I hope I'm doing this correctly.

On 5/30/08 DSFunction posted - word for word - a story that was written by [info]morgan_d. [info]morgan_d's story can be found here and here.

The Case Against Wickedplotbunny [May. 30th, 2008|10:58 am]

[Tags|, , , , , , ]

On April 29, 2008, [info]alyse reported that wickedplotbunny plagiarized her.

It then quickly came to light that there were others. See this fabulous chart that [info]alyse created to track her stories and which ones have been identified as plagiarized and who the original author is. To date, Dr. Who, SGA, SG-1, Star Trek, and Torchwood fandoms are affected as well as published writer Jenny Downham.

The Details including connect the ID dots. )

My condolences to the people that she hooked in to be betas. The writer and beta relationship is one of trust (not to mention sweat and occasionally tears). To misuse people this way is a violation of that trust.

Thank you to [info]alyse and her mighty flist – thanks to them, many of the fics' original authors have been identified. Thank you to [info]mrs_cj_harkness and [info]hellenelight for their assistance.

Thank you to [info]sg1_debrief for bringing attention to the case in their May 1, 2008 newsletter, and [info]pough for posting about it here in the [info]torch_wood community.

If there is anyone I'm missing who should be thanked or noted, please let me know. Particularly if you are familiar with Doctor Who, SGA, SG1, Star Trek, Star Wars, or Torchwood, I ask that you check out the stories not yet identified to see if you recognize their source.

ETA June 2,2008: Thank you to [info]aelfgyfu_mead for first recognizing the story was not wickedplotbunny's and [info]sg_fignewton for her help identifying some of the original sources, which then led to contacting [info]alyse. ETA June 3, 2008: Thank you to [info]stasha2g for helping identify a couple of the stories in question.

I contacted Jodie aka Darksaber aka OdeToSpot aka Wickedplotbunny on May 24, 2008. To date, I’ve received no reply. Given the information in this case, particularly the amount of verbatim plagiarism, I will be adding wickedplotbunny to the list of known plagiarists.

The Repeat Case Against Chen06 aka Li Ping aka Ping aka Usagi Chiba aka Marcella [May. 14th, 2008|11:39 pm]

spiralleds
[Tags|, , , , , ]

On March 26, 2008, [info]lightbird777 reported that [info]limulan aka Chen06 aka Li Ping aka Ping aka Usagi Chiba aka Marcella plagiarized multiple stories in the Detective Conan, Jane Eyre, Mulan, Sailor Moon, and X-Files fandoms. Her general mode of operation is to translate the fic, including the original title, into either German and/or Italian, and then post it as if she wrote it. Her behavior was previously addressed here. Since then she has continued her behavior, and in fact appears to be expanding the number of stories and their locations.

Please Note: there are several fics where we do not yet know the original author. I have not had an opportunity to check FFN or do any google-fu. Your help is greatly appreciated, especially if you have connections in the Jane Eyre, Sailor Moon, and X-Files.
Please keep reading, particularly if you are familiar with the Detective Conan, Jane Eyre, Mulan, Sailor Moon, or X-Files fandoms, and-or read German or Italian. )

I am sure there are all sorts of errors in my information, particularly in the Detective Conan fandom where something inspired a numbers theme, ex: 30 Memories, 30 Kisses, 40 Nights, etc. There seems to be more than one story with the same title. Please let me know when you find things that are inaccurate.

Mac Animate is set that if you are not a registered user, you can only access the site a finite amount of times. Given the language barrier, I am not registered, but it is my understanding that they have not yet removed the fic in question. (Although this was quite a while ago and may have changed by now.)

Erica's Fanfic Page (EFP) has a statement about removal of the fic.

[info]pengychan, [info]lightbird777, [info]bf_nightingale, and [info]defenderxl have been amazing in this case. They have really taken on the lion's share of work, which was particularly necessary since their Italian and German is far better than mine. They have been contacting the various sites and having fairly good luck in having the mods pull the stories and when possible ban Chen06 from posting. In fact, at the time that I was making caps, several of the sites had already pulled the stories.

I contacted Marcella on April 29, 2008. To date, I’ve received no reply. Given the information in this case, I will be adding Chen06/Li Ping/Ping/ Usagi Chiba to the list of known plagiarists.

I'm hopeful that this post will assist the sites that are sorting through Marcella's posts to pull her account and ban her if possible.

I am hoping to have another mod follow up with each of the authors that have been identified, both as a courtesy and in hopes they may recognize the missing fic.

ETA: Sorry, [info]pengychan! Didn't mean to leave you out! Thank you! Thank you!

ETA 2: As of May 15, 2008, she's been banned from Writers Arena.

Summary of the case against rensgurl4ever [May. 14th, 2008|01:50 pm]

The case against rensgurl4ever

On May 9th, 2008, it was reported to us that a person posting under the name of rensgurl4ever at deviantART, was posting art that was appeared to be traced or copied from multiple places, including both official manga and original fanart. (Please see the original report here.) I contacted rensgurl4ever, but to date I have not received a reply.

In comparing the art, some of it appears to be a direct copy.
rensgurl4ever’s artwork
original fanart from Tsuru Tsuru

Others appear to be copied, however certain panels or other characters have been removed, most notably the ones with dialogue, or the dialogue has been changed. Yet others appear to be copied, with mostly minimal changes such as hair.
rensgurl4ever’s version
original fanart

An additional supporting factor, was the two videos below that she has posted on You Tube
1)”My Tao Len drawings 2”
2)”My Drawings!”
Both of these videos contain drawings that are felt to demonstrate the artist’s true level of skill, and illustrate the marked difference between the art in question and her own level of skill, as there does not seem to be any middle ground showing clear progression of skills. Many of the images appear to clearly be tracings, and several are uncolored versions of the reported images.

It was determined that since the given images could not have been created without the use of the other’s works, and rengurl4ever’s own comments on the posted art work indicating that they were her own ideas and creations, and she has acknowledged on at least one occasion that she knew she should credit her source, this does indeed constitute a form of plagiarism.

Both YouTube and deviantART have been notified and we will continue to follow up on that.

For her plagiarism of Kipferl & archie-the-redcat at deviatART, and three doujinshi- Tsuru Tsuru, Chuchu, and Yui Mizushima, as well as the official Shaman King Manga,

Rensgurl4ever will be added to the list of known plagiarists.

06/04/09 - Edited to Update! Rensgurl4ever has come forward and confessed that she did in fact trace the art in question and represent it as her own. The following is an exerpt from her admission:

"I'm sorry about all this and I'm finally ready to admit it. I do trace on occasions, it's just a habit I have, I just didn't want to tell anyone because I would feel stupid.....And I have a reason for it, there's some pics out there that I find and I think they look really awesome. I want my pic to look like the original pic because I admire it so I trace it."

When I reviewed with her the proper way to credit, and the right thing to do in this situation, her simple reply was, "I know."

All of this transpired via her alternate account on DeviantArt - Haoswife. When I was made aware of the alternate account, it too contained several of the same images that had been plagiarized.

She has since removed all of the reported images. She is, however, still posting traced artwork without crediting her source despite aknowleging that she knows to do so.

rensgurl4ever's alias haoswife will therefore be added to her profile on the known plagiarists.

On May 6th, a "sporking" of a deviantart account containing pictures of a Mary Sue paired with Tao Ren of the Shaman King fandom was posting in [info]marysues. A friend sent me some links to some pieces she thought were weird, disturbing, or laughable. After she showed me one that I recognized instantly as a page from the original Shaman King manga, I went through her gallery, trying to see if this was the only instance in which she had traced a picture and passed it off as her own.

Spring, when the fannish heart turns to modding. [May. 4th, 2008|10:59 pm]

[Tags|]
[Current Mood | hopeful]

It’s been quite busy around [info]stop_plagiarism of late, and we have concluded it is time to bring some more mods onto the team. So, to recap a previous post by the intrepid [info]quinara, we're again asking, "Do you want to be a mod?"

But, Spi, I don’t really know anything about plagiarism!

We aren’t looking for people who necessarily know a lot about plagiarism, just people who can be calm, inquisitive, logical and thorough – people who are willing to work on a case, and deal with works they might not normally seek out themselves due to rating, pairing etc.

It sounds a bit too much like hard work for me. What would I even get out of it?

Cases can sometimes become a bit involved, but that in no way outbalances the rewards. You get to investigate situations, google-fuing eventually like the best of them, and solve cases (which is so much more satisfying than a su doku); you experience the pleasure of giving something back to the fandom that you love; and you get to join [info]stop_plag_mods where you can have extremely interesting discussions about issues that arise, making friends and developing your own deductive powers.

Does it matter what fandom(s) I belong to?

Not at all! It doesn’t even matter what you do in fandom – though some knowledge of the way online-fandom operates would probably be useful. By that I don’t mean that you have to have intimate knowledge of how one makes an icon or wallpaper - just an appreciation for what they are.

That’s all very well, but now you’re going to make me jump through hoops, aren’t you?

Not really – just leave a comment and we’ll give it a try.

I just don't think I'm cut out for the whole investigative thing, but you know, I've really wondered if you'd like someone to add tags to the posts/fix your lame graphics and layout/some other specific task we've not realized we need.

Let me know what you have in mind, if at all possible, we'd love to add additional folks. Many hands make light work, etc.

Anybody convinced? Remember – if you don’t fancy becoming one now, there’s a public post in [info]stop_plag_mods and you can comment on at any time. If you aren't quite sure and therefor don't want to leave a public reply, please feel free to email me directly.

ETA: We're probably at our max of mods for the moment. Thank you all for the support!

The case against dark_desires79 [Apr. 30th, 2008|06:00 pm]

[Tags|, , , , , , , ]

This was first reported to us on the 28th April by [info]crayolarainbows, but by that time the case was more or less closed.  The reporting post can be found here, it contains all of the relevant links.   After her plagiarism was discovered, dark_desires79 first friends locked her LJ and then deleted it.  I did try to contact her, but all the mails I sent just bounced back.

Original story Carnival by [info]bibi_bloom is located here and was posted on 02/14/05.  dark_desires79's version, changed from a Linkin Park RPS to CW RPS, was posted 17/04/08

Though dark_desires79 deleted her journal LJ seek cached two of the posts.  Carnival parts one and two  (screencaps here and here)

dark_desires79's name will be added to the list of known plagerists.

Thank you to [info]crayolarainbows for reporting and collecting the bulk of the links.

Well, I never thought it would happen to me. [Apr. 29th, 2008|06:42 pm]

I have been plagiarised. Whoo! [/sarcasm]

My story Silence, which was written for SG-1, has been reposted with the names changed as a Torchwood story, Isolation, by wickedplotbunny.

Here is my line by line comparison of the first three or four paragraphs. I didn't have the energy to do more.

Unfortunately, I don't have the original date that my story was posted, because I moved my site and it's not posted on my LJ as far as I can tell, but it dates from around 2001/2002. It was nominated for an award in the SG Fan Awards in 2002, which should hopefully provide some evidence of the date.

However, I can confirm that was posted to my new site in March 2004 and also posted to the JAM archive in October of that year (which I ran at the time for my friends and me).

I've got screencaps of her story as well as the original html file if needed.

I've dealt with plagiarism from the other side (I've been running archives since 2000) but never been on this side of the fence. It's an experience, I can tell you that.

The Case Against Kigrl18 [Apr. 28th, 2008|11:34 pm]

On April 13, 2009 [info]darsynia reported that Kigrl18 plagiarized three stories:

The Shall I Know by [info]darsynia a.k.a. Ssergit, (Screen caps of Plagiarist’s: 1, 2)

The Secret Diary of Hermione Granger by The Hooded Menace (Screen cap of Plagiarist’s: 1)

She Will Be Loved by The Rejected Spork (Screen caps of Plagiarist’s: 1, 2)

The Details )

Given the information in this case, particularly the amount of verbatim plagiarism, and that the facts just do not add up that her account was compromised, I will be adding Kirgrl18 to the list of known plagiarists. I will also be contacting The Hooded Menance.

Thank you to [info]darsynia and [info]ladywhitehart for your help with this case.

ETA: After posting this, it came to our attention that Kigrl18 has since added a story to her account, Kidnapped (1, 2, 3, 4) that is taking from another, Aligirl70's Kidnapped. Kigrl18's pattern has remained the same in that she previously reviewed another of Aligirl70's stories.

[info]ladywhitehart is following up with both Aligirl70 and Kigrl18.

On April 28th, 2008, pandora reported to the lpfiction.com users (here) that dark_desires79 was posting a story called "Carnival" on the Supernatural community [info]padacklesrps. This story, which was up to its fourth chapter, was an exact replica of [info]bibi_bloom's story of the same name (minus character names). dark_desires79 began posting her story on April 17th, 2008. [info]bibi_bloom posted her story on February 14th, 2005, and completed it on April 17th, 2005.

A screen cap of dark_desires79's story can be found here.
A screen cap of [info]bibi_bloom's story can be found here.

The original can be found here, and a screen cap showing the dates posted can be found here.

The story was found to have been cross-posted to [info]spn_beyond, [info]super_real and [info]bottom_sammy. Upon discovery, dark_desires79 first friend-locked all of her entries (she linked to her journal instead of posting directly to the community) and later, after I made a post in the previously-mentioned communities (excluding [info]bottom_sammy), dark_desires79 deleted the story. She has since contacted [info]bibi_bloom and apologized to her.

Thanks to pandora, [info]vanchi (for the screen cap of the plagiarized story), [info]gummibear_queen, and the mods/users of [info]spn_beyond, [info]padacklesrps, and [info]super_real for their quick response and requesting I report dark_desires79 to this community.

Summery of the case against Terminatrix [Apr. 27th, 2008|01:31 pm]

[Tags|, , , , ]

On the 18th April 2008, [info]indiefic reported that an author on the CameronandJohn.com site took her story The End is the Beginning is the End and reposted it word for word with only a change of title.  Further investigation (reading the reviews again) Revealed that a further two of the stories on Terminatrix's profile were lifted from other authors.

Wonders By MarieLightning
Family Ties By JediMaster-Jen

[info]ladywhitehart contacted these authors to alert them to the situation.

Complete screencaps of the stories and reviews and Terminatrix's profile before the plagiarized stories were deleted are located here

Both [info]indiefic and I contacted the mods of the CameronandJohn.com site, but received no reply, though I am not sure if the email system set up on the site works, the site seems a bit buggy . There was no other way to contact Terminatrix directly other than the review function on the site.

All three of the plagiarized fics were removed from the site, I suspect by Terminatrix herself since four stories remain on her profile.  I would say that these stories were written by Terminatrix given the extreme jump in quality.  Other than the removal of the stories there has been no contact from Terminatrix or the mods of the site.

Terminatrix will be added to the list of known plagerists and we will keep an eye on her profile to see if she tries this again.

summary of the case against the battling bard [Apr. 26th, 2008|01:05 am]

[Tags|, , , , , , ]

On March 21st, it was brought to our attention (here) that The Battling Bard posted a poem entitled "Arwen's Requiem" to Fanfiction.net on 2/1708 and "Felagund's Requiem" (1, 2, 3) to MyFandoms.com on 3/16/08 which were heavily influenced by Terachi Kaishaku's story Don't Look Back Look Left!, posted 1/20/03.

Interestingly, The Battling Bard read and reviewed Terachi's story here.  Terachi was contacted in order to determine whether or not she and The Battling Bard were the same person (they were not), or if she had given The Battling Bard permission to use her poem (she had not).

Two attempts were made to contact The Battling Bard, once on March 22nd (via email) and again on March 27th (via LJ), with no reply.  However, in light of the information above, The Battling Bard will be added to the list of known plagiarists.

Thank you to [info]maiafay  for bringing the case to our attention and for all the screencaps.

summary of the case against magickboxgirl [Apr. 25th, 2008|10:00 pm]

sevvy_o
On April 4th, it was brought to our attention (link) that magickboxgirl posted several stories in the Tinman fandom that plagiarized several authors from the Buffy fandom.

1) Midnight Swim, chapter 2, posted 2/25/08, and chapter 3, posted 3/1/08, taken from Pattyanne's fic Caught Between Two Lovers, last updated 4/18/05.

2) No Turning Back (chapter 7) posted 2/26/08, taken from Needlework by [info]hollydb, 10/28/06

3) Then the Morning Comes posted 3/18/08, taken from To Sin--Divine! by [info]alwaysjbj, 8/16/04

4) Eight Ball Corner Pocket posted 2/27/08, taken from Pattyanne's Fun and Games, 8/16/04

5) Seek and Find posted 12/20/07, taken from Sunscreen and Sand by [info]bloodytearslife, 9/5/05

I contacted magickboxgirl on April 8th concerning the allegations and she responded with the following:

Well as I have no way to prove that I am innocent all I can say is that I have never read any of these stories, I run all my stories through Beta's before I post them I am extremely sorry this has happened, I do have my hand written notes from when I would work on these stories when I was on call and did not have access to a computer. I have removed all my stories from the Internet until such time as this can be worked through. I did find it very offensive the way this was handled and you should know my stand on plagiarism is I totally abhor it and find it offensive that I would be accused of something I find wrong. I was raised that stealing is stealing no matter how you do it. I have no idea what else to say or what you would like me to do other than to say I am sorry this has happened.

I then replied with line-by-line evidence, but she did not respond. However, given all the information above, magickboxgirl will be added to the list of known plagiarists on our community profile page. Additionally, her stories have been removed from [info]dg_cain, [info]tinman_fic, [info]tin_and_jewels, and [info]10_themes. I'm pretty sure that's all of it.

Thank you to [info]raemcn for bringing the case to our attention and all the mods of the various Tinman communities ([info]tinmanmods) for their prompt action.

The Case Against Ilsaluvsrick [Apr. 23rd, 2008|09:58 pm]

spiralleds
[Tags|, , , ]

On April 13, 2008, [info]thisisbone reported that [info]ilsaluvsrick plagiarized her story. This follows a previously identified and addressed case of plagiarism by [info]ilsaluvsrickwhich is detailed here.

A Little Night Music by [info]thisisbone (Screen cap of Plagiarist’s version, called Kindness of Strangers: 1, 2)

It then came to light that there are other items that have been plagiarized.
There is the published story, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. Compare these phrases: she never fumbles and in a clear uncompromising line with these phrases: in a clear uncompromising line, and Mama never fumbles. These are not long lines, but even if there are no others, these are unlikely to show up in such combinations independently. It does also sound like there is a similarity in Mama from ATGIB and Evie from Fumbles.

The third one is actually an older, not previously reported to this community situation. It is [info]yahtzee63's Soap Opera. At the time that [info]yahtzee63 was originally addressing this, she thought it was a one time blip by [info]ilsaluvsrick. The 'revised' for Heroes original version is here. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

See the side by side with yellow highlights for identical phrases and green highlights for really similar text: 1, 2, and 3.

Weirdly, after [info]yahtzee63 pointed out the chunks of identical material, Ilsa left that post up, and then wrote a revised version here. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5,6). Also rather odd, while this re-revised version has fewer elements of Yahtzee's, but is not plagiarism free.

I contacted [info]islaluvsrick back on April13, 2008. To date, I’ve received no reply. As it was the same way I contacted her before (via LJ PM), I have no reason to believe she doesn't know about my inquiry. Given the information in this case, particularly the amount of verbatim plagiarism, I will be adding [info]islaluvsrick, again, to the list of known plagiarists. I will also be contacting the mods of the various Heroes communities to which she is a member, encouraging them to minimally review the fic she's posted to ensure it is none of the above. I will also converse with the other mods about whether we need a different action for repeat plagiarists other than the one year listing.

Thank you to [info]sheafrotherdon, [info]thisisbone, [info]tiptoe39, and [info]yahtzee63 for their assistance with this case.

On April 2, 2005, [info]larissa_j reported that The Captains Quattro plagiarized several stories:

To date, I have not received a reply. It is possible that there was a real person “muse” named Rebecca. However, as my message outlined, it was unlikely and even if true, highly problematic in itself. Given that I have not heard back from The Captains Quattro or Rebecca, and given that she also had an account on A Teaspoon and an Open Mind, which was the source of the plagiarized fic, I am finding her responsible of plagiarism and she will be added to our list of known plagiarists.

Thank you to [info]larissa_j, [info]jagwriter78, and [info]ligia_elena’s help with this case.

8 years in the fandom and this is the first time this has ever happened to me. I suppose I should feel lucky. Heh.

My story The End is the Beginning is the End, written for the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, was posted on 3/13/08 to ff.net. It's also posted to LJ, but in a FLocked entry.

Today, I was notified that someone writing under the pen name Terminatrix has posted a story titled He Had To Learn It Somewhere to www.CameronandJohn.com.

It is a word for word steal.

This author has posted 7 stories total, all yesterday, so I assume the rest of them are probably plagiarized as well (though none of the others are mine).

I'm having a really hard time navigating this site and I can't find any contact information for the "author". I left a review on the story stating that it was stolen and to remove it. I have not contacted any of the site admins yet.

I wasn't sure what kind of screen caps are useful. I actually made a copy of the plagiarized story into a .pdf file.

Summery of the case against Seita [Apr. 18th, 2008|06:14 pm]

frayen
On the 31st March, [info]writer83729 reported that a ff.net user Seita plagiarized her story So cold.

After a little investigating (reading the reviews) it was found that Seita apparently also plagiarized another fic Keeping Company by wyvern girl, taking passages from both stories and rewording them slightly to make up the body of her fic Factors of ending war.

Screencaps here, here and here.

Seita has one more story on her profile, in the Helsing fandom. But I have not turned up any more information on that.

I have contacted Seita, but as yet received no reply. I have connected wyvern girl to inform her of the situation, but received no reply. I have contacted ff.net, but no action has been taken by them so far.

Seita's name will be added to the list of known plagerists and I will update this post as and when more action is taken i.e if the fic Factors of ending war is taken down.
